Chemistry Issue or Topic
What is the relationship between the elements atomic numbers and the diameters of their atoms? Why do you think so? The elements are Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba.
Answer the Question
Atomic radii ( diameter ) of group elements in general increase as increase of atomic number or as agroup is descended because electrons are being added to shells farther from the nucleus. So atomic radii order : Mg < Ca < Sr < Ba atomic number : 12 < 20 < 38 < 56 ...As I know there is no link or relationship between atomic radii sets and atomic numbers.
Tips and Tricks
- Atomic radii become smaller as you move across a row or period (increasing atomic number), but larger as you move down the periodic table in a group or column (increasing atomic number).
