Science Projects for Middle School Students

Here's a list of projects targeted at the middle school educational level. Middle school students can do these projects for fun or as part of an educational science project.

Recycled Paper

Sam holds up handmade paper she made from recycled old paper.
Anne Helmenstine
Make beautiful craft paper from bits and pieces of leftover paper. Feel free to add flower petals or pieces of string. This is a fun project that shows how paper is made and helps turn waste into something practical.

Sharpie Pen Tie Dye

The patterns produced from sharpie tie dye look a little like compact discs to me.
Anne Helmenstine
Create wearable art using science. This version of tie dye uses permanent markers and rubbing alcohol to create patterns on a t-shirt or other article of clothing.

Salt Crystal Geode

This salt crystal geode was grown on a piece of eggshell.
Anne Helmenstine
Make a geode that showcases the beautiful cubic form of salt crystals. You can make the crystals any color you like. You can use a pre-made geode (an empty egg shell) or you can form a geode shape from plaster of Paris.

Ivory Soap in the Microwave

It looks like he is offering you a cream pie or whipped cream, but that's soap!
Anne Helmenstine
If you nuke Ivory soap in the microwave you'll get a mass of bubbly foam. Other types of soap will simply melt.

Non-Toxic Lava Lamp

You can make your own lava lamp using safe household ingredients.
Anne Helmenstine
Make a lava lamp from non-toxic kitchen ingredients. The colored blobs have a different density from the surrounding liquid. Instead of heat, carbon dioxide bubbles cause them to circulate around the container.
