1963 - Seth Barnes Nicholson died.

Nicholson was an American astronomer who discovered four moons of Jupiter. He joined up with Edison Pettit in the 1920s to make the first systematic observations of planetary bodies and the sun using an infrared detector.

1946 - Richard Axel was born.

Axel is an American neuroscientist who shares the 2004 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their research into the olefactory system. They showed the olefactory receptors were G-protein coupled and introduced the genetic study of the mechanics of the system.

1906 - Hans Albrecht Bethe was born.

Bethe was a German-American physicist who was awarded the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physics for describing how stars produce energy. He was also head of the Theoretical Physics department during the Manhatten Project.

1862 - William Henry Bragg was born.

William Henry Bragg (1862 - 1942)Nobel Prize Foundation
Bragg shared the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics with his son, William Lawrence Bragg for the development of x-ray crystallography. He also worked on a detection system against German U-boats during World War I.
