Amethyst from Hiddenite, NC.

Amethyst is a purple form of quartz (crystal silicon dioxide). At one time, the purple color was attributed to the presence of manganese, but it is now believed the color derives from an interaction between iron and aluminum.

If you heat amethyst it becomes yellow and is called citrine. Citrine (yellow quartz) also occurs naturally.
