These are instructions for preparing ammonia gas (NH₃)from ammonium chloride and calcium hydroxide in water.

Reactants

ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl)
calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂]

Gas Preparation

Gently heat a mixture of ammonium chloride and calcium hydroxide in water. Collect the ammonia from the upward displacement of air in a hood.

Reaction

Ca(OH)₂ + 2NH₄Cl --> 2NH₃ + CaCl₂ + 2H₂O
