Richard Willstätter was a German organic chemist who studied the structure of plant pigments.

Birth:

August 13, 1872 in Karlsruhe, Germany

Death:

August 3, 1942 in Locarno, Switzerland

Claim to Fame:

Willstätter was a German chemist who was awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research into plant pigments. He determined the structure of chlorophyll. He also determined the porphyrin compound in chlorophyll was similar to the heme group in hemoglobin. Willstätter developed a method of paper chromatography independently from the method of Mikhail Tsvet.
