Pelletier was a French chemist and pharmacist who researched vegetable alkaloids. He discovered strychnine, quinine, caffeine, and many other alkaloids. He also isolated chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants necessary for photosynthesis with French chemist Joseph-Bienaimé Caventou.
