Claim to Fame

  • Invented the explosive dynamite by combining diatomaceous earth with nitroglycerin.
  • Invented blasting gelatin or gelignite as an safer and more stable alternitive to dynamite.
Notable Awards

  • Set up a foundation after his death that created five annual prizes in the fields of physical science, chemistry, medical science, literature, and peace. These prizes became known as the Nobel Prize.
