- Invented the explosive dynamite by combining diatomaceous earth with nitroglycerin.
- Invented blasting gelatin or gelignite as an safer and more stable alternitive to dynamite.
- Set up a foundation after his death that created five annual prizes in the fields of physical science, chemistry, medical science, literature, and peace. These prizes became known as the Nobel Prize.
