Guide Experiences and Research
When About.com asked Guides to post reviews and consumer recommendations for items related to the site's topic, I readily hit upon water filters as a place to start. Like most readers, I have access to an approved public water supply. In my case, the water supply runs through copper pipes, including lead solder, and older Delta fixtures (mmmm... lead... giveaway for contamination is a sweet taste that vanishes after the water has run for a few minutes!). I live in an agricultural area, with a nice concentration of pesticides and herbicides, as well as some metal and chemical processing plants. I tested my water supply and felt the need for improvement, so next came the purchase of a bunch of water filters. The BRITA filters did cost me a couple of US dollars more than the other ones I tried, but the pitcher didn't leak, the water didn't taste strange, and the manufacturer supplied a mechanism to help me remember to change the filter. My first pitcher accidentally broke (it will shatter if dropped), hence my trials with other brands. When I went to write my product summary I looked at several consumer reports, which unanimously arrived at the same conclusion I have. Oh, and for those of you who swear by bottled water... check your labels and reconsider. Not only do you get repeated exposure to unpolymerized plastic from the container (not an issue with plastic that is washed and reused), but you may be getting yummy water from my town or someplace similar!
