Top College Essentials

By Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., About.com

Calculators and computers are essential for college success. There are additional items that make a Science major's life much easier. You can purchase these items at school, but expect to pay a premium for them there. Compare prices online for the best buys and options.

1. Calculator

A calculator is absolutely essential. Choose one with scientific functions and graphing capability. Read the instruction manual and learn how to use all of the functions. Engrave your name on the calculator.

2. Dictionary

It may be a stereotype, but Science majors have a reputation for less-than-exceptional communication skills. Don't contribute to the stereotype! Who goes to a library to look up a word? Get a dictionary and improve your spelling and vocabulary.

3. Notebook Computer

Yes, schools have computer labs... and viruses, waiting in line, distractions, etc. Some schools require you to bring your own computer. Even if it isn't a requirement, a Science major really needs one! Portability is worth the price.

4. Writer's Guide

Diana Hacker's and Axelrod's references are good ones. Several excellent writer's guides exist. Get one! You WILL be writing papers and expected to write them in an acceptable format. Be advised that some schools will require a specific style.

5. CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics

This is a really handy book to have! I purchase a used one in college and still use it today. Chemistry or physics majors need easy access to this reference. The library will have one, but it can't be checked out.

6. Merck Index

This reference is for a chemistry major, with information about toxicity of chemicals and instructions for preparing standard solutions. Strictly speaking, it isn't essential, but it would make a nice gift for a chem major.
