Make Sparkly Paint

By Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D., About.com Guide

This non-toxic paint uses starch and salt for its glittery effects.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Version One: Premix liquid starch and tempera powder. Use as paint or fingerpaint. Add salt for extra glitter!
  2. Version Two: Spread liquid starch on paper. Let painters use salt shaker (or something similar) to shake tempera onto the paper. Spread as desired. Add salt for extra glitter.
  3. Have fun!

Tips:

  1. Slick paper for fingerpainting or the shiny side of freezer paper work best, but are not required for the sparkly effect.
  2. Any salt will work, but glitter is more noticeable with coarse salt than with table salt.
  3. Tempera paint is fairly non-toxic, but not edible :-)
  4. Try lemon-scented starch for an aromatherapy touch!

What You Need:

  • Liquid Starch
  • Powdered Tempera Paint
  • Coarse Salt
  • Paper
