January 1st marks the beginning of a new year and the passing of Martin Heinrich Klaproth. Klaproth was a leading German apothecary and chemist of his time. He was responsible for many improvements in analytical chemistry and mineralogy. He was the first to identify the elements uranium, zirconium and titanium but did not successfully isolate them.
