Alcohol color affects hangover severity. (Chris huh)Hangovers have existed since alcohol was discovered, which is basically since the dawn of time, yet there has been little research into the unpleasant aftereffects of overindulgence. It is generally accepted that different types of alcohol can have different effects, mostly related to the impurities they contain. However, contaminants are not the only chemicals that can contribute to hangover severity.

Scientists at Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies in Providence, Rhode Island, and the University of Michigan Medical School have determined that alcohols containing more congeners produce worse hangover symptoms than alcohols containing fewer congeners. Congeners are complex organic molecules that result from the fermentation or aging process and produce the characteristic flavors and aromas of specific types of alcohol. Examples of congeners are acetone, acetaldehyde, and tannins. One way of gauging the concentration of congeners in an alcoholic beverage is by its color. Pale spirits contain fewer congeners than darker spirits, so you can expect a hangover from the same dose of a lighter-colored alcohol may be less severe than a hangover from a deeply-colored alcohol.

Interesting… I knew that Vodka is one of the drinks that produces the least severe hangover, but I didn’t know that its lack of color was an indicator of it. Thanks for the info!

I think the best and the logic solution of hangover proplem is to be a muslim because islam make drinking alcohol is forbiden completly due to its nasty effects on the human mind and health not like christians drink a bad drinks every year and every occasion after that they complain the the bad effects of alcohol on health so i advice every good person to study the islam (http://www.islam-guide.com)

You need to delete the link added by Mohammed! What a load of crap using this article to slag off at Christians. I’m neither Muslim nor Christian, but it’s clear that being muslim causes more “nasty effects on the human mind” than the odd drink. Millions of muslim men worldwide have an evil sense of superiority & think being muslim allows them to bully, bash & violate their wifes and murder or maim anyone to restore their honour. Don’t your dare say every good person should study islam.

Wow “Balanced,” those are definitely some of the most ignorant statements I have ever heard. I have some very close Muslim friends and have met plenty of practicing Muslims and I can tell you that they are quintessential Americans–hard working, tolerant, and respectful. So please, take your prejudice, uneducated bullshit elsewhere.

It is a sad reflection of the state of the world when scientific information about the causes of hangovers can end in a slagging match between proselyting muslims and bigoted christians. Science is about presenting the facts and using them to find out more, not about private hobby horses. If we know we get headaches and organ/intellectual failure from excessive consuming certain substances whether it is alcohol or qat – an equally dangerous substance abused by many practising muslims, then we have to make choices about our life styles and that is up to ourselves, not any deity.

The mohammed’s statement about alcohol are as equally false and backwards as his belief that women should be forced to wear ridiculous head coverings and undergo the other subjection they are forced to endure. Its a proven scientific fact that have 1 – 2 glasses of wine per day lead to an increase in cardiovascular health and it’s also a proven fact that when people are allowed freedom and liberty to decide how they want to live their lives they are also happier.

Nice to know the chemistry of Hangovers and its relation to color of drink. Don’t mix chemistry with personal beliefs and spoil the year ending
