Periodic Table of Elements (Getty Images)An international team of researchers working at the GSI research facility in Germany has announced compelling evidence for the detection of a new element - element 115. The team, led by Lund University (Sweden) physicists, bombarded americium film with calcium ions and measured particles emitted from the reaction. The x-ray spectrum was consistent with the expected decay scheme of element 115. Earlier measurements of element 115 were presented by a Dubna Russian team in 2004, but required confirmation before the element could be officially 'discovered'. If the research is validated, scientists can proceed with naming the element. Element 115 presently bears the placeholder name ununpentium, which simply means 'element 115'. Findings are published in the August 27, 2013 The Physical Review Letters.
