On May 28, 1998, Pakistan responded to their neighbor India's test of five nuclear devices on May 11 and 13 with five of their own. Pakistan's Atomic Energy Commission reported the five tests had a combined yield of 40 kilotons. Two days later they detonated another test of a 12 kiloton device. Independent verification of seismic data points to a yield between 9 and 12 kilotons, well under the reported 40. The tests heightened tension between India and Pakistan and drew condemnation and sanctions from the United Nations.
