Bioluminescence Kayaking in Florida

Bioluminescent Comb Jelly (NOAA)I love all forms of luminescence! If you've been following me a while, you likely know this, based on the large numbers of glow in the dark projects and demonstrations I've posted. So, when I got the chance to check out the bioluminescence in Florida's Indian River Lagoon, I had to check it out. When the water is warm, the lagoon glows from the bioluminescence of millions of tiny dinoflagellates. During the cooler months, comb jellies accumulate in the lagoon, which emit a bright green luminescence when disturbed. I enjoyed the summer trip so much I took two of my teens to experience the comb jellies earlier this week. We made the drive from Myrtle Beach, SC to Titusville, FL just to kayak in the lagoon.
