Keep in mind, salary varies widely from one location to another depending on the cost of living and other factors. Another big factor is how many years of experience the chemist has. If you're looking for some average numbers, here's what a chemist makes.

With what degree? I’m in my Ph.D. studies right now, and having talked to people who have made it through to the other side, starting salaries vary greatly for chemists with a B.S. and chemists with a Ph.D. I would guess the salaries in the linked list are closer to what a B.S. chemist would make.
(I can also see it being a true average given that there are probably significantly more B.S. chemists than Ph.D. chemists
)
I would some what agree, there is a varying range but keep in mind there are different fields of chemistry as well and a lot of it comes down to your qualifications. Certainly now a days there are more people getting masters and phd degrees, and as such that dilutes the market (in any field).
I think a lot of it comes down to the amount of publications you put out, and the contacts you make while you are a phd student; you could have a million great ideas, but if you can’t show any of them work, what good are you to a company?
I would say generally speaking (at least in Canada) starting salaries with a BS in chemistry would get you rougly 30-40k, a masters 45-60, and PhD 60-?????????
but that is just my rough estimation, and I know of people getting over 100k starting, but that was because the company very much wanted them.
hope this helps.
