These chalk chromatogaphy examples were made using chalk with ink and food coloring. (Anne Helmenstine)Chromatography is an important analytical chemistry technique where a material is separated into components, typically based on size or electric charge. While high end lab chromatography may be expensive and seem impossibly complicated, the concept is extremely simple! In fact, you can use common everyday materials to separate molecules. One of the quickest, easiest and most colorful types of chromatography is chalk chromatography, where you use the porous nature of chalk to separate pigments. You can examine the component colors of an ink pen or could analyze the pigments in food or leaves. Be creative!
