October 8th is Henry-Louis Le Chatelier's birthday. He was the French chemist that gave us the Le Chatelier's Principle. This principle says a reaction in an equilibrium state will compensate for changes in the system by counteracting the change to restore equilibrium. It helps chemists predict how changing the concentration, pressure, volume or temperature will affect their reactions. For example: If more reactant is increased, the equilibrium will shift to use up these reactants to produce more product. The overall goal is for the system to maintain its equilibrium state.

Le Chatelier's Principle is an important and fundamental part of chemical dynamics. Find out what else occurred on this day in science history.
