On September 12, 1959, the Soviets launched the second of their Luna series spacecraft towards the moon. It was designed to confirm Luna 1's discovery of the solar wind and to impact on the surface of the Moon. It would impact the surface on September 14 to become the first man made object to reach the Moon.
September 12, 1962 was the day President Kennedy made his Moon speech dedicating the nation's support to landing a man on the moon and bringing him back safely by the end of the decade. The United States would successfully meet this challenge on July 20, 1969.
