You can make a density column using chemicals that won't mix (e.g., patriotic density column), but it isn't necessary to use different materials to get nice layers. This density column is made using four sugar solutions. The project is safe and easy enough for even young kids. All you need is sugar, water, and food coloring. One note: I don't recommend using gel food colorings. As you can see in my photo, kids will have trouble mixing them into the solution.Kids may enjoy trying this using different flavors of Kool-Aid™ instead of the food coloring, to make layers they can drink. There are two ways you can do it. One is to use four flavors of unsweetened Kool-Aid™ instead of the food coloring. The other is to use the sweetened powder instead of the sugar and coloring. Have fun!
