June 12th marks the passing of Karl von Frisch. Frisch was an Austrian biologist who investigated the behavior and senses of bees. He found bees can see in the ultraviolet spectrum of light and are sensitive to polarized light. He also determined the meaning of the 'wiggle dance' that bees perform to inform other bees the distance and direction to sources of pollen and nectar. His investigations into bee life would earn him part of the 1973 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
