Making Crystal Meth - Breaking Bad

Wednesday January 30, 2008
I've been watching the new tv series on AMC called "Breaking Bad" which is about a chemistry teacher who gets diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and decides to make crystal meth to earn some money for his family (not that teaching high school chemistry doesn't make a mint). The writers consulted with the US DEA about how to make crystal meth, so the meth lab is pretty realistic. While I could tell you how to make any number of chemical weapons, I personally did not know how one would go about making crystal meth. The DEA says instructions are easily found on the internet, but you won't be finding detailed instructions here (nor the chemical weapon ones, in case you were wondering). What I will tell you is making crystal meth involves reducing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine and is easy enough just about anyone can do it, which is why my favorite over-the-counter allergy and cold medicines are so hard to find.

Now... just because it's easy to make crystal meth doesn't mean it's smart. First off, it's highly illegal. It's also decently hazardous to your health. In the US, a typical meth lab employs something called the 'Red, White, and Blue Process', which entails hydrogenation of the hydroxyl group on the ephedrine or pseudoephedrine molecule. The red is red phosphorus, white is the ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, and blue is iodine, used to make hydroiodic acid. If you aren't careful, you can expose yourself to highly toxic phosphine gas. White phosphorus with sodium hydroxide produces the gas, usually as a result of overheating red phosphorus, plus white phosphorus can autoignite and blow up the meth lab. In the first episode of "Breaking Bad", the chemistry-prof-turned-meth-chef gets away from some bad guys by purposely cooking up phosphine to use as a poison. In addition to phosphine and phosphorus, various nasty vapors may be found floating around a meth lab, such as chloroform, ether, acetone, ammonia, hydrochloric acid, methylamine, iodine, hydroiodic acid, lithium or sodium, mercury, and hydrogen gas.

Although meth is second only to alcohol and marijuana in terms of drug popularity in many parts of the US, there are some really excellent reasons why I'm more likely to grab a beer than mess with crystal meth. It causes nerve damage that produces degeneration of brain tissue reminiscent of what you get from Alzheimer's, is associated with meth mouth (in which your teeth rot and fall out), and tends to cause long-lasting behavioral changes even in people who only use it once or twice. I would guess most of the more heinous side effects of crystal meth result from contamination of methamphetamine with the reagents or solvents (most crystal meth is of abysmally low purity), since methamphetamines have reputable prescribed uses, too. Even so, I'll stick with coffee as my preferred pick-me-up. The tv show seems pretty good so far. The characters are interesting and I've certainly learned more about crystal meth than I knew before.

G.R.:

Those are simply solutions of different salts dissolved in ethanol. The solution that made the purple flame for example was a potassium salt in ethanol.

I realize that it has it’s dangers and I believe that it is demonized by law in order to take advantage of those stupid enough to play with it. Governments that prey on their citizens, especially their poor and impoverished, should be punished under the same capitol punishment laws that deter corruption in other parts of the world. We need change and we need it desperately. This has gone on long enough and those responsible for jailing the impoverished should be jailed themselves.

Dear Anne Marie:

Though your post is quite informative and useful in a general sense, unfortunately it faults in it being disproportionately bent towards the “cons” of Crystal Meth use. You give specifics as far as the negative side effects but only lightly graze over the “pros” of this substance. For example you fail to mention how in the United States a legal version of Crystal Meth is prescribed by doctors and psychiatrists. This medicine is called Desoxyn, and, like its “cousin” Concerta, it’s currently being used with relatively good results in the treatment of conditions such as ADD and ADHD. Unlike Concerta though (which chemically is not a methamphetamine), Desoxyn produces fewer side effects. Yet, unlike Concerta, doctors and psychiatrists are terrified by the possibility of prescribing it due to how Crystal Meth has been demonized over the years. So, a less effective (and quite debilitating, if you ask me) drug is currently being given to hopeful patients, while a much better one (which, obviously, requires a closer watch by doctors due to its higher risk of addiction than Concerta) is kept hidden from them.

This is not to say that I am advocating the illegal purchase and use of Crystal Meth by the population at large. I’m simply pointing out that you faulted when you avoided (deliberately or not) to present us with some specific examples about Crystal Meth’s “pros”.

As per what’s good or not to an individual, I’ll use the following example in the hope to drive home a more general statement. Spending hours watching inane soap operas on TV is not very healthy for the watcher’s brain (especially in the long run). Also, the frequent ad breaks, end up damaging the watcher’s attention span and focus. Third, such a “habit” (to use a less “demonizing” term) has the side effect of keeping the watcher indoors and away from more useful and beneficial activities (especially, the physically engaging ones like sports, the gym, etc.) Fourth, the ads themselves act as a mental conditioning. It is generally understood that TV ads are created and designed for the deliberate purpose of modifying people’s behaviors, purpose achieved by undermining the watcher’s self-confidence and stimulating his/her sense of inadequacy and dissatisfaction about his/her choices, lifestyle, appearance, possessions, etc. Clearly, a highly and very destructive process. Yet, this type of “habit” is not even warned against, and of course, no one touch the ads!

Am I right?

Thank you!

Mark

I only hope that parents block these sites and watch their kids very close because once they are gone it is too late to cry.

BEFORE I START I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO THE OTHER POSTERS ON HERE WANTING TO LEARN HOW TO MANUFACTURE THE ILLEGAL DRUG METHAMPHETAMINE BEWARE THIS CHEMICAL IS IN MY OPINION VERY DANGEROUS TO MAKE AND ALSO DANGEROUS TO DO. IT TOOK ALMOST 3 YEARS OF MY LIFE AWAY FROM ME AND MY FAMILY WITH MY ADDICTION(NOT INCARCERATION, JUST NEGLECT ON MY PART TO VISIT MY FAMILY BECAUSE I WAS NEVER WANTING THEM TO SEE ME HIGH OFF THIS DRUG AND I USED METH AS OFTEN AS I COULD AFFORD IT.ANYTHING I TEACH U I HOPE U ONLY USE IT FOR INFORMATIONAL REASONS, IM NOT SAYING IT WILL RUIN APART OF UR LIFE IM JUST SAYING IT AFFECTED MY LIFE MORE THAN I COULD UNDERSTAND BEFORE I USED THIS DRUG. AS FOR THE COMMENT ABOVE ABOUT THE MAN WHO HAS A GOOD LIFE AND IS 50 AND READY TO START HAVING SOME RISKY FUN, I WOULD ASK U IF U EVER HAVE BEEN ADDICTED TO A DRUG THAT TOOK U 3 MONTHS TO STOP FIENING FOR IT RIGHT WHEN U WOKE UP, WHICH IS JUST ONE PART OF THE ADDICTION. IM NOT TRYING TO BE A HYPOCRITE, JUST GIVING U A FAIR WARNING BEFORE DWELLING INTO THIS SUBSTANCE. I PERSONALLY THINK ADULTS SHOULD HAVE THE LAST SAY IN WHAT GOES INTO THERE SYSTEM, BUT IF UR LIFE IS GOOD NOW THEN MAYBE U SHOULD TRY AND KEEP IT THAT WAY. SORRY FOR THE ALL THE CAPS I JUST FEEL THAT I COULD SAY ALL THIS AND ALOT MORE BEFORE I START GIVING OUT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS SORT.
uncle festers secrets to methamphetamine is a good book to read if u have a small to moderate amount of knowledge of inorganic chemistry and can read between the lines, a safer newer alternative is a fertilizer method which replaces anhydrous with firilizer, it can be done with almost all plastic materials, and u dont run the risk of getting caught with pink dye on u or killing off awhole herd of cows because you got nervise and ran or didnt have a good understanding of how to remove anhydros from a pressurized tank. if i could suggest one thing, it would be to search for a fertilizer method using only a the contents of nitrogen and nothing else(i.e. on the front of the bag there should be 3 numbers, ur looking for one with a ingredient list which is displayed like this: A – B – C, with each ABC representing a value of each ingredient)(u should be able to find one with 2 zeros and one number with a greater value than zero i.e. 0-15-0 with 15 representing the nitrogen content.) 15 is only a example, u want to find the highest number u can. since its alot easier to obtain and safer to handle. although its a safer method in my own opinion beaware fertilizer contains AMOUNIUM NITRATE(dangerous shock sensitive explosive) which can be activated with certain chemicals. mixing parts of fertilizer with desiel fuel creates an explosive that can be detonated with a smaller starter explosive(example: oklahoma city bombing was a terrible tradegdy that involved using only these chemicals to take down almost a whole building with one cargo van, although i guess there were other vans as well to complete the sickening rampage but were found and safely deactivated. LAST WARNING: think first – react second – and please be safe in your thirst for knowledge, later.

and one more thing if u do go through with any of this please dont think about doing it in a urban eviroment, what damage u do to yourself is your business, but when ur endangering other peoples lifes by cooking around other people ur taking a extreme risk, which there is no good reason to justify ur actions for what u chose to do around other individials. its too dangerous for anyone to do this, no matter how certified u are(or not at all like myself) accidents can and do happen. unless u want blood on your hands dont cook around anyone but yourself. adults are adults and thats that. laws can help infulence some people to act a certain way, but as of right now the people are always going to be the ones left with the decision to use or not to use, laws can always make people feel one way, but there is no law that can make everyone listen to what big brother has to say. not in a free country anyway in my opinion. once again please besafe and remember knowledge is power, and comes great power comes great responsibuility. i know that sounds corny and maybe overstated but i stand by those words and i think its made me a more responsible person learning how to control what u would like to do and what should be just left as a greater knowledge and apprieciation for ones own self interest. i like knowing that fact that i have learned so much controversial knowledge over the years in anything from drug manufacturing to small amounts of info on explosive ordinance and other amazing weaponry that most people fear to learn because of somebody’s sterotypical view on what one should be interested and what the majority sees’ as taboo. for myself i like the fact that i have knowledge which most people dont and i can be responsible enough to realize the dangers i possess. to understand how something works and only choose to use it if the time really calls for it(i.e. a possible attack from another contry which renders the public to maintain a well orginized militia in times of crisis(please dont think of me as a paranoid person just waiting for things to happen, i just think that one should be prepared to beable to defends oneself and family members if harms way ever comes. most likely this may never happen(beyond the recent n. korean threats that are going on as i type this). another example that may make you think from my perspective would be to imagine u living in a house and someone breaks into your house and not knowing that ur trained in different self-defense techniques such as defensive firearms use, hand to hand combat, knife fighting, and a little knowledge of the laws on self-defense. with these skills the perp. could be brought off guard thinking that maybe the status quoe is with them. i wouldnt suggest trying to put up a fight over your material items, but if someone is daring enough to point a gun at u or a family member of yours then it could be brought to a point of him/them vs. u/ur family for survival, in which ur training could be a option if the oppertunity is there. or another example is that if a person was aware of ur skills then they might be persuaded to think harder about the risk because they see a greater possibuility of things going sour in there position. would you cause b and e or worse to someone else and there family if u were aware that they were trained better than u and is more wiling to fight with u rather than threaten to call the police(u should try and contact the police if there is an optimal time to do so, its there job to take that risk and having blood on ur hands even though the person was risking ur and ur familys lifes, taking a life is taking a life which i cant imagine anyone getting complete satisfaction for what they done and not feeling a little remorse to the perp. or better yet the perps. family which maybe great people but had no choice in what there relatives chose to do. i know if i had a troubled son that caused heart break to a family i would still have to stick by them through the dark times for feeling like the job of a father wasnt completed and needs to be addressed is a manor which hopefully a person of wrong doing will truly understand in time what they did was wrong and not just trying to accept that it was wrong in everyone else’s eyes beyond his own.

sorry for another long boring lecture from me but i want to try and cover the seriousness of making such substances under ones’ own supervision since i cannot be there to hold ur hand when u need to know what to do because u just caught ur wall on fire and ur whole house is next.

once again please remember to use caution if attempting to do this, and to have a complete understanding of what ur doing. research is the key to success and safety even if it takes several years to build up the confidence to pull off such a scheme. a good source of free info on chemicals is a standard MSDS for all of the chemicals ur working with. in the usa all chemicals are required to have a MSDS with info on all of the dangers associated with that said chemical.if it isnt apparent to u all ready about the following safety equipment required to do this as saftest as your knowledge allows u, then take note. always atleast have these on hand. this is a short list of a few basic things u should have in a toxic eviroment. gloves(latex might be to thin to use, so double up or get something thicker than standerd latex gloves, along with gas mask made to filtrate any mentioned chemicals, goggles of course for ur eyes(looking like a geek is better than looking like you took an acid bath) aperines are great for keeping ur clothes in decent condition(if u could come across a full suit with immunity to low end acids then that would be a great helper for this project), being coverd is absolutely nessisary to prevent injury. note, im not an expert and i bet you arn’t either so take what i say as a helper and not as a complete manual for the safety of this project.
please read, read, and then read some more. any ?’s just post them and i will be back when i can.
