Can you pick out which of the women in the photograph is Marie Curie? I'll give you a hint: two of the other women are her daughters. Chemistry is a fascinating science that has been elucidated by equally interesting individuals. I've starteded adding concise profiles of some notable scientists. Here are some facts you may not know:
  • Marie Curie - Didn't start her studies at the Sorbonne until she was 24. She suffered from stage fright, though she gave many lectures. Marie overcame multiple prejudices, based on her sex, heritage, and even because she was studying science.
  • J.J. Thomson - J.J. stands for Joseph John. He was reputedly clumsy with his hands, though he could design and troubleshoot equipment brilliantly.
  • Ernest Rutherford - In addition to his own research, Rutherford was noted for his skill collaborating with others, including Niels Bohr, Hans Geiger, and H. G. J. Moseley. During World War I, his work was concerned with submarine detection.
