It's a habit now, from a long history of can-tapping since high school. Why do I do it? My friends were convinced tapping on a can of soda before opening it would reduce the chances it would spray everywhere. Even if it's true, the effect is not as significant as... say... not shaking up the can in the first place. There are arguments for and against can-tapping, based on the science of carbonation.
