Woman Dies from Drinking too Much Water

By January 14, 2007

Some athletes are told to load up on water before activity. That may be dangerous advice.

CNN reported on a woman who died Friday from drinking too much water. Jennifer Strange (28) was participating in a radio station's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest to see who could drink the most water before having to go to the bathroom. The condition that results from over-hydrating, hyponatremia, sometimes is seen in infants who are given bottles of water to drink (not a good plan) and also in some athletes who drink as much water as they can before exercising (e.g., marathon runners).

It's important to stay hydrated, but how do you know if you're overdoing it? One of the first signs of water intoxication is swelling. If your fingers start to get puffy where your rings become tight, that could indicate a problem. Other symptoms of hyponatremia are nausea and dizziness. If you experience these symptoms and suspect water intoxication, stop drinking more water (that part should be obvious) and seek medical attention. Eat some food to replace the electrolytes (salts) that are being diluted by the water.

During the competition the womans belly got fairly distended so it was obvious that she had too much water in her.
And yet the fools did nothing. -_-

Trey your a dumb, of course she died from drinking to much water. Her osmolarity levels were messed up so unnecessary water was entering her cells and tissue causing them to lyse=DEATH. Even if she did go to the bathroom her concentration of electrolytes would still be messed up.

That woman should have stopped, but i don’t feel bad for her as much as I do for her children. I heard that she tried to win that wii for her kids, and all they got was a dead mom. So sad = (……

you all are idiots. she didnt deserve to die like that especially trying to win something for her kids. some people are not educated about things and this could be one of the things she wasn’t educated about so she maybe just didnt know what it would do to her!

This story is about a woman overhydrating and being ignorant of the fact that it could and did kill her. Where did women texting and driving become part of this? I see nowhere in the story where this woman died or killed someone from texting while driving. If you two insist upon being rude and disrespectful about someone’s death, at least keep your comments relevant.

Poor kids… I wonder if they got the Wii?
But even then, I agree with Ki and John. I doubt they even went through this subject in school. And anyway, whose stupid idea was it to create that contest? Haven’t they heard of the simple hot dog eating contest!

For the people who said “that’s what she gets” and things of that nature you’re a group of a$$holes. She made a mistake not knowing it could be fatal and you trolls feel she deserves to die because of it. That’s pathetic.

For everyone who said she deserves to die, you guys are a**holes, she was just trying to be a good mom and get her kids an xbox, she didn’t know it was unsafe, it’s not really her fault, although i do agree she shouldn’t have taken it this far

Catherine…… the “two” guys commenting about texting while driving are the same person. The caps and atrocious grammar should have set off a few signals. Get a clue… you probably drive and text all the time and got a little butt hurt over their comments. I totally agree with him! And this dumb broad drinking water for a Wii didn’t want a Wii for her kids (bullshit sob story), she just wanted 15 minutes of fame for being on some 3rd-rate radio station.

(19) secret admirer says:

okay. just from reading a lot of your reviews upon this topic of a woman overhydrating is quite stressful. There happens to be more negative comments than positive ones. If you look at this though from another perspective there is a entirely whole different story. Take her kids for an example, her kids never asked her to do this contest but their mom did it for them anyways because she loves them. Her husband, her friends, and family if they had read all your awful comments about her what do you think they would think? You might not give sh!t but what if lets just say what IF this was you? I know a lot of our first reactions would be “idc” but be honest. Everyone is allowed to have their own point of views but remember once you put what you have on your mind on the internet it never goes away even if you delete your comment. Everyone has already read what you had to say. For those who have their own opinions but also agreeing with the rude harsh people, should really think.

(20) Mary Kuch says:

I am so upset to know that there are so many heartless people in this world. I feel so sorry for that lady she obviously had no idea that drinking to much water could kill her. She has three children so as many of us know when you are pregnant you have to go for ultra-sounds and before your ultra-sound you are told to drink an excessive amount of water and not pee. So with that in mind I’m sure this lady did not think she could die from drinking too much water and not peeing. So the next time all you ignorant heartless people leave a stupid comment just stop and think about it first. No one ever deserves to die come on now use your brains.

(21) Desiree says:

wow…you people are rude! No one deserves to die. The fact that you could even think that about someone who was unaware or a medical issue that could arise from drinking water, is sad. Although, most of you believe that people should just know about over hydration; it is not that common. Be nice people, it comes back around.
