Make a Compound
Wednesday May 10, 2006
When you make a mixture, you just combine ingredients in a potentially reversible way. You can get a mixture when you sift dry baking ingredients together or when you pour water into a jar of rocks (it's easier to separate the rocks/water than the baking ingredients). You can make mixtures with elements, too. For example, you can mix iron filings with sulfur powder. All it takes to separate the iron from the sulfur in the mixture is a magnet.
You can make a compound from iron and sulfur by applying heat. Unlike the ingredients in a mixture, a compound is a completely new substance. You can't get the original components back using a separation technique. Another chemical reaction would be required. Try it out...
