A calorimeter is a device used to measure the quantity of heat flow in a chemical reaction. Heat flow, in turn, can be used to calculate the enthalpy change of the reaction. There are two main types of calorimeters commonly used in the chem lab, the coffee cup calorimeter and the bomb calorimeter. You can make your own coffee cup calorimeter using (you guessed it) a styrofoam coffee cup with a lid, and a thermometer, which can be inserted where a straw or stirrer would go. Learn more...
