Can You Drink Too Much Water?

Yes, Caitlin this is possible.
That is typical when a lot of water is consumed.
Nothing is wrong there.

Here is a question for any professionals:
I am a sixteen year-old male and on average drink 5-6 Liters of water(NO JOKE) –sometimes even 7-8. But rarely, I experience a kind of high or almost intoxicated feeling, where I feel tired yet I am somewhat hyper and converse tirelessly and laugh at anything remotely funny.
Just the other day I operated a vehicle while in this state; I did not feel “drunk”, but I had to force myself to pay great attention. Is this feeling typical? And must it be avoided?

When too much water enters the body’s cells, the tissues swell with the excess fluid. Your cells maintain a specific concentration gradient, so excess water outside the cells (the serum) draws sodium from within the cells out into the serum in an attempt to re-establish the necessary concentration. As more water accumulates, the serum sodium concentration drops — a condition known as hyponatremia. The other way cells try to regain the electrolyte balance is for water outside the cells to rush into the cells via osmosis. The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from higher to lower concentration is called osmosis. Although electrolytes are more concentrated inside the cells than outside, the water outside the cells is ‘more concentrated’ or ‘less dilute’ since it contains fewer electrolytes. Both electrolytes and water move across the cell membrane in an effort to balance concentration. Theoretically, cells could swell to the point of bursting.

From the cell’s point of view, water intoxication produces the same effects as would result from drowning in fresh water. Electrolyte imbalance and tissue swelling can cause an irregular heartbeat, allow fluid to enter the lungs, and may cause fluttering eyelids. Swelling puts pressure on the brain and nerves, which can cause behaviors resembling alcohol intoxication. Swelling of brain tissues can cause seizures, coma and ultimately death unless water intake is restricted and a hypertonic saline (salt) solution is administered. If treatment is given before tissue swelling causes too much cellular damage, then a complete recovery can be expected within a few days.

Maybe u are drinking TO much water. As it says u can feel drunk or act drunk.

I’m starting to drink a gallon of water a day. Mainly for weight loss and I’m trying to stop drinking Diet Coke. If I drink that much water, there is no room for soda! But I’m wondering if it is good for me to drink so much.

If you feel tired from drinking too much water, it can be a result of changes in blood pressure. I used to drink huge amounts of caffeine without enough water and found that despite the caffeine, i would fall asleep. I did some research and found that the sleepiness was a result in the body’s inability to increase blood pressure due to dehydration from the caffeine…

hey i hav been having wieght problems all my life and i went thru a stage were i would just drink water and eat small meals and only one or two a day. i lost alot of weight and i was wondering if it was because of the water? i still eat small meals and exercise the same amount, so if i drink more water wold that help me lose the weight that i hav put on in the last few months??? plz some one help me i want to be the confident person i use to be

I drink about 10-12 glasses of water a day as I recently joined Weight Watchers. They recommend 6 liquids a day but water is better. I think it depends on how heavy you are the amount of water your body needs.

1-gallon is enough a day which is about 3/4 litres even for pro athletes or regular people who are slightly active
it actually is a great weight loss method. if you exercise you will sweat out the excess water which would pack on weight(even light exercise where you work up a good sweat)and if youve never drank that much before your bladder wont take it so easily at first so you will urinate enough so you wont need to worry about water weight. disgusting but true facts and even if you get used to it and you think your arent visiting the bathroom as much itll still work the same way so there is no need to drink more because that could be very dangerous.

i’m 14, but i have weight problems, and i’ve been drinking more water than i really ever have. water just never really appealed to me, but i want to be a healthy person, so i’ve been drinking heavy amounts of water and maybe a glass of koolaid or tea every few days. i eat a really small meal about every 3 hours and i’m noticing i’m “visiting the bathroom” more often than ever, which i think is a good thing. but my “fecal matter” is green and watery? any reason why? (and yes i have been eating healthy, and i don’t think i’m sick)

I drink at least 2 liters everyday and sometimes even up to 4 liters of water a day, but I find myself getting headaches when I drink a lot of water, say over 2 liters. Is that normal?

I too get headaches if more than 2 liters is drank. I think this is normal.

As for weightloss, eight 8-ounce glasses amount to about two quarts of water. This is okay for the average person, but if you’re overweight, you should drink another eight ounces for every 25 pounds of excess weight you carry. You should also up this if you live in a hot climate or exercise very intensely.

But yes, you CAN drink too much water. Especially if your BMI is less than the average persons and your water intake is more than the average persons.

Its definately possible to drink to much water…this is how ravers “drown” when they take the drug ecstasy.
If you are experiencing headaches try diluting your water with 1/4 gatorade ect. This will help replenish your electrolytes, and diluting will cut down on the unnecessary sugars in sport drinks(which would be counter productive if weight loss is your goal)

Please do your own research into what I have posted though; as its only my interpretation , and I’d hate to give anyone bad advice.
