Chemistry Test Intended to Deter Drink Spiking

Thursday April 8, 2004
A pocket-sized do-it-yourself chemistry kit has become available in Britain for testing drink samples for traces of benzodiazepines, GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) and ketamine. Although these are not the only drugs associated with the spiking of alcoholic drinks, it is hoped that the availability of the tests may deter drink spiking and serve as a source of evidence against attackers. To perform the test, drops of the drink to be tested are applied to reactive paper. Results are available within 30 seconds. The kit is available online and sells for about $7 (US).
