Spring has sprung, at least where I live. Its harbinger was a mosquito - the first of many - so I'm reviewing my anti-mosquito tactics. The city sprays malathion. For personal use, there's the synthetic chemical, DEET, which is great for spraying on denim (repels fleas and ticks too), but less pleasant for use on skin. For daily use, I prefer a natural mosquito repellent. I need to update my natural repellent list, because I apparently forgot to include the repellent I actually use, which is based on eucalyptus. The eucalyptus-based products worked so well last year that I'm adding the plant to my yard this year. However, I wonder if this will repel mosquitos from my yard or simply drive them toward the house. On a related note, many home supply stores are now carrying termite repellents based on nepetalactone, from catnip. The chemical acts as an insect pheromone, with differing effects depending on species. For example, while it may repel cockroaches and termites, it tends to attract aphids.
