Aquamarines and emeralds are essentially the same gemstone, but aquamarine stones derive their distinctive blue coloration from the presence of scandium. As a pure metal, scandium is silvery-white, but it becomes pink or yellow upon exposure to air. Scandium is the first transition metal, yet many people have never even heard of it.
