Add Fish to Your Pool to Save Money

Monday November 17, 2003
Of course, these aren't just any fish. These are manmade 'fish', designed by father and son team Robert and Daniel O'Brien of the Victoria, B.C., company, Flexible Solutions. The fish contain a 'gingerbread man' molecule suspended in isopropyl alcohol. To use a fish, its dorsal fin is cut off and the fish is thrown into the pool, where it sinks to the bottom. The cut fin allows for a slow release of the fish contents, which form a monomolecular film on the surface of the pool. The hydrophobic carbon 'heads' of the molecules rest on the surface, while the alcohol 'feet' dangle in the water. The pool is cheaper to keep warm because less heat is lost through water evaporation. Once a fish is empty, it floats to the top of the pool. Kinda sounds like purposely creating an oil slick on your pool, don't you think? For more information, read the full text of the article at the Toronto Star.
