The Hype about Hydrogen-Fueled Cars

President Bush and several presidential candidates are pressing to spend billions of dollars to develop hydrogen-powdered fuel cells and hydrogen-fuel vehicles. Hydrogen cars are supposed to be environmentally friendly and reduce dependency on oil imports. Is the reasoning sound? Hmmm... Don't we get our hydrogen from fossil fuels, releasing lots of greenhouse gases in the process? Aren't there cheaper, faster ways to accomplish the goals of the hydrogen fuel cell program? Alex Farrell at UC Berkeley and David Keith at Carnegie Mellon University are among those who feel we should rethink the way we approach hydrogen fuel technology.
